Simulation-Based Learning

Experiential insight into leadership, teamwork, and execution

Simulation-based learning creates powerful insight by placing participants inside realistic, time-bound challenges where leadership behaviours, team dynamics, and system constraints become visible in real time.

I offer Paper Planes, Inc.® both as a facilitated leadership and team experience and as a professional certification for those who want to deliver the simulation themselves.

What Is a Simulation?

In leadership development, a simulation is a dynamic, interactive learning experience that mirrors real organizational challenges in a controlled environment. Participants actively engage, make decisions, experience consequences, and reflect on outcomes—creating deep, practical learning.

Simulations provide a safe space to experiment, learn from missteps, and refine leadership practice, making them highly effective for teams and leadership groups.

Paper Planes, Inc.® Simulation

Building high-performing teams through systems thinking

Designed from a systems perspective, Paper Planes, Inc.® is a highly interactive simulation that focuses on:

  • teamwork and collaboration
  • organizational effectiveness
  • silos and handoffs
  • engagement and accountability
  • customer service and quality

The simulation integrates real organizational challenges with leadership and team dynamics, using a data-informed learning approach. Teams measure performance across key indicators and compare results against normative data, making outcomes visible and actionable.

The Simulation Experience

Participants take on roles within an aircraft manufacturing company and work together to produce planes that meet defined quality and customer standards.

The simulation unfolds across three production runs, each followed by facilitated reflection and redesign:

Run 1 – Traditionally Designed System

Participants experience a pre-designed production process, highlighting common organizational constraints and inefficiencies.

Run 2 – Participatively Designed System

Teams redesign the system themselves, experiencing the impact of involvement on quality, cost, commitment, and morale.

Run 3 – High-Performing System

Through collaboration and continuous improvement, participants see how ownership and learning drive sustainable performance gains.

Performance is evaluated across:

  • cost
  • quality
  • customer satisfaction
  • delivery time
  • employee engagement
